NEW YORK (Reuters) - Menswear at New York Fashion Week typically takes a backseat to the more showy and better-known women's lines, but the collections unveiled this week show U.S. menswear designers coming into their own with strong performances, buyers and trend analysts said.

While male consumers often favor comfort and ease in clothing over the latest styles, the looks on the runways this week are likely to trickle down into mass retail clothing lines as these designers gain influence, they said.

"The men's shows in New York this season have been incredibly strong," said Eric Jennings, men's fashion director for Saks Fifth Avenue, a top U.S. store.

At New York's semi-annual Fashion Week, where hundreds of designers are unveiling their fall and winter 2010 lines through Thursday, only a handful of shows feature just menswear.

Dutch government collapses over Afghan war

Nato has assured Afghans they can rely on its support despite the uncertain future of Dutch troops there following the collapse of their government.

It came after the two largest parties failed to agree over a Nato request to extend the tour of the almost 2,000-strong Dutch contingent past August.

A Nato spokesman said it would provide support to Afghans whatever happened.

Earlier, the governor of Uruzgan said peace and reconstruction efforts would suffer a setback if the Dutch left.

Economists fear that the nascent recovery will leave more people behind than in past recessions, failing to create jobs in sufficient numbers to absorb the record-setting ranks of the long-term unemployed.

Call them the new poor: people long accustomed to the comforts of middle-class life who are now relying on public assistance for the first time in their lives — potentially for years to come.

Scotty Lago, winner of the bronze medal in the men's halfpipe snowboarding event Wednesday, voluntarily left the Winter Olympics Friday after risqué photos of a woman kissing and biting the medal surfaced in the media.

The free-spirited Lago, 22, was snapped with his bronze medal around his waist and the hardware hung over his groin area, allowing a woman to kiss it on a public street late Thursday in Vancouver.
