Sponsorship-strapped JRM replaces Bires with McMurray

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (AP)—Kelly Bires was released Tuesday by sponsorship-strapped JR Motorsports, which is finding it difficult to develop young drivers without corporate backing.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. created the team as an avenue to develop drivers in NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide Series level. But he and his family are running much of this season out of pocket because sponsorship has been difficult to land.

Bires drove JRM’s flagship No. 88, which is only partially funded this year. Danica Patrick drives the No. 5 on a part-time basis with sponsorship from GoDaddy.com, but JRM is trying to run that car the entire season.

“We are extremely appreciative of Kelly Bires and wish him the best,” said Kelley Earnhardt, co-owner of JRM and Earnhardt’s sister.

“Internally, it was evident the chemistry that is imperative for us to succeed in this highly competitive industry was simply not there. That is the fault of no one person. We owe it to our fans and sponsors to make necessary adjustments in an effort to put our best product on the track, and we’ll continue evaluating our progress until we are confident that our full potential is being reached.”

Bires did not run the season-opening event at Daytona because a sponsor commitment required Earnhardt to drive that race. He did pilot the No. 88 in the previous five events, finishing a season-best seventh at California in his only top 10 this year.

Duke!

Where does Duke-Butler rank on all-time games list?

When Gordon Hayward's final shot was launched, the sound you heard was all the air going out of the argument that the Final Four should be re-seeded.

The college season would have had a different feel if Duke-Butler was a semifinal and Duke's blowing by West Virginia happened last night.

We'll take destiny everyday over a committee crunching numbers to pair up teams they think should be in the national title game.

Some games you watch and move on and some we watch again or replay in our minds over and over.

Duke-Butler is one of those.

The NCAA championship game has put us to sleep by halftime. But it also gave us jumpers by Michael Jordan, Keith Smart and Mario Chalmers.

It gave us Jim Valvano looking for someone to hug and Villanova's slingshot stoning of Georgetown.

After we have time to digest what happened last night, after we exhaust all talk of whether Coach K made the right decision by missing the final free throw, what will be the legacy of Duke-Butler?

Scottie Pippen, Karl Malone lead 2010 Hall of Fame class

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Scottie Pippen considers himself a double winner. He'll enter basketball's Hall of Fame as an individual and a member of the Dream Team on the same day.

"I'll be able to take one trip and kill both," Pippen said with a laugh.

Pippen, Karl Malone and two of the best U.S. Olympic teams — including that famed 1992 Dream Team — were selected Monday as part of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's class of 2010. Malone and Pippen, both eligible for election for the first time, were part of that '92 Olympic team.

Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss, high school coaching great Bob Hurley Sr., and WNBA star Cynthia Cooper also were in the class announced at the Final Four. NBA veterans Dennis Johnson and Gus Johnson and international star Maciel "Ubiratan" Pereira will be honored posthumously.

The 1960 and 1992 U.S. Olympic teams, which both won Olympic gold medals, will be part of the induction ceremony on Aug. 13.

Drama and intrigue and excitement coalesced into a back-and-forth battle between baseball’s two best teams, and though it counted equal to all the other games, it meant plenty more, every moment sliced thin, placed on a slide and primed for microscopic examination.

NCAA's 96-team March Madness for 2011?

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA appears to be on the verge of expanding the men's basketball tournament to 96 teams.

Insisting that nothing has been decided, NCAA vice president Greg Shaheen nonetheless outlined a detailed plan Thursday that included the logistics and timing of a 96-team tournament, how much time off the players would have and even revenue distribution.

Shaheen said the NCAA looked at keeping the current 65-team field and expanding to 68 or 80 teams, but decided the bigger bracket was best fit logistically and financially.

It would be played during the same time frame as the current three-week tournament and include first-round byes for 32 teams.

Although the plan still needs to be approved by the Division I Men's Basketball Committee and passed on to the board of directors, most of the details already seem to be in place.

"We needed to make sure that we did everything possible to use the due diligence window to understand ourselves and understand what the future would hold," Shaheen said. "So that's what we're doing, that's the process we're undertaking. We've been handling it every day for the last several months and years, as we studied for the benefit of the organization."
