DO NOT Use Your PS3 for Next 24 Hours

Yes, you'll either have to be productive or slum it with your XBox for the time being

For the last day or so, many users around the globe have reported problems with their PlayStation 3 gaming consoles, particularly when trying to get online with them. Error codes, lack of PlayStation Network service, and disappearing trophies are some of the symptoms plaguing gamers.

Sony has now released a statement saying they've found the problem and are working on a fix. For gamers who have the PS3 Slim model, released last fall, you're okay to keep on playing, same as before, and can relax. For those who have the original larger-formfactor console, Sony advises you to not use your console for the next 24 hours while they complete the fix.

Elements of Firefox overhaul arrive for testing

Please don't suck, please don't suck

Mozilla, faced with new competitive pressures, has begun work on three separate, significant changes to Firefox.

First is a new JavaScript engine that--with a transfusion from the project behind Apple's Safari--should run Web-based programs at least 30 percent faster. Second is a new graphics engine for Windows that will take advantage of hardware acceleration for graphics and text. And third is a programming tool to help bring to fruition a new system for Firefox add-ons.

Mozilla made notable gains against the dominant Internet Explorer since Firefox's launch five years ago, but for much of that time, Microsoft's browser barely budged. Now Google's Chrome has burst onto the scene, Apple is marketing Safari for Windows as well as Mac OS X, Opera development is moving fast, and, potentially most significantly, Microsoft is showing signs of serious interest in rejuvenating IE.

Firefox could use a shot in the arm, too. Its share of global browser usage crested in November at 24.7 percent, according to Net Applications, and has slid to 24.2 percent according to preliminary statistics for February released Monday. In that same period, Chrome grew from 3.9 percent to 5.6 percent.

Austerity - a word you should get to know...

Austerity - is when a government reduces its spending and/or increases user fees to pay back creditors. Austerity is usually required when a government's fiscal deficit spending is felt to be unsustainable.

Austerity is beyond the fake "left wing"/"right wing" paradigm. It's NOT the typical argument of spending cuts vs tax hikes, it is both AND it is worse than you can imagine. It is a society in which taxes are beyond reasonable, almost feudal and services are nonexistent and may actually cause you harm

Unemployment benefits for many expire today

One Senator blocking extension. Democracy?

Richard Jones of Brookfield spent four months in Louisiana helping communities rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. Now, he needs a little help himself, but a lone U.S. senator is blocking the way.

Jones, 29, is among the 15,000 Illinoisans whose unemployment benefits expire today because of a filibuster by U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) Bunning is using Senate rules to block a vote to fund extended benefits for people nationwide who have exhausted the basic 26 weeks of coverage.

Even with an unemployment check, it has been hard to make ends meet, said Jones, a former trucking supervisor jobless since January 2009. "All my savings is gone," he said. "If I hurt myself, I can't even go to the doctor."

US military spied on Planned Parenthood, civilian phone calls

Thanks, G.I. Joe, I didn't know you were spying on my family planning. And knowing's half the battle

United States military intelligence spied on Planned Parenthood and other domestic groups as part of US security preparations for the 2002 winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, according to a recently declassified military document obtained by a civil liberties group Thursday.

The document (PDF - page 98), drafted by a Pentagon Deputy Inspector General whose name is redacted, was included in more than 800 pages released to the Electronic Frontier Foundation as part of a Freedom of Information Act Request. They include reports from the Pentagon's Intelligence Oversight Board that were submitted to the Defense Secretary from 2001 to 2007.
